Culture Challenge of the Week: Seventeen Magazine, et al.

If you dare to look behind the gloss, glam and glitz, it's enough to make you sick. Sick about how our preteen and teen girls are being used and manipulated by the fake "friends" that write and publish teen media.

One of the worst perpetrators is Seventeen magazine. And the May issue is probably the sickest of them all, complete with an extra dose of duplicity and hypocrisy.

The cover of Seventeen features the "star" of one of the most popular trash-television programs for teenagers today — "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" a program filled with teen sex. They do this, of course, so teen girls will slap down some serious cash to find out why starlet Shailene Woodley isn't "the girl you think she is." (I'm not sure what teen girls "think she is," but the article gushes about how the 18-year-old "Shai" and her boyfriend packed their bags and moved to N.Y., where they shacked up.) And, get this: another feature article in the same edition discusses how television shows like "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" can "trick" girls into "getting pregnant."

Of course, while pretending to criticize such programs, the magazine also heavily promotes those same shows in their publication throughout the year. It also portrays "hooking up" as normal behavior for teens, runs ads that tells girls how to get guys to touch their legs, and frequently promotes lesbianism.

On the surface, it might look like Seventeen and one of its major partners, the Candie's Foundation, are truly concerned about the physical and emotional well-being of our young women. After all, they are engaged in a campaign to help reduce teen pregnancy. How can that be bad? Because they are hypocrites. Because while they brag about spending so much money to come up with "cool" ads aimed at reducing teen pregnancy, they are simultaneously part of the media culture that is constantly encouraging our young girls to have sex. To give the appearance of looking responsible, they "attack" other media outlets for doing exactly what they do every month: brainwash our young women into thinking they have to be sex kittens. Our girls deserve better.

How to Save Your Daughter from Being Used

It's time that parents watch and read what their girls are consuming. Watch the trashy shows like "Gossip Girls," "The Secret Life of the American Teenager," and "Glee." Pick up a copy of the sleazy Seventeen, Glamour and Cosmopolitan. Do it one time, and you will suddenly realize that today's teenage girls are being treated like red meat — and encouraged to serve it up as a part of normal teen life.

The message that is being drilled into their psyches is painfully obvious: Forget about your intelligence, your goodness, your kindness, your grace or your moral integrity — the way to get ahead in the world is by using your sexual power.

Start deconstructing the shows and the messages with your daughter. Let her know that she is being used and manipulated into buying the magazines, the sponsors' products, the Candie's shoes, etc. Show her how her natural teen interest in sexuality and boys is being skillfully twisted and manipulated by adults who are masters in marketing their wares to her age group.

And of course, find something else fun for your daughter to do with all of that time she is wasting. Above all else, let her know how much you love her, and that she is a person of high value. Introduce her to movements such as Pure Fashion (www.purefashion.org) that understand how fashion and morality can work together. If she's college bound, encourage her to become involved in groups like the Network of Enlightened Women (www.EnlightenedWomen.org) who expose the rabid media culture and radical feminism for what they are: damaging and degrading to women.

Your daughter does deserve better. Help make sure she knows it.

  3. ReportTHE FELLOWSHIP OF THE UNASHAMED
.by Teri Shrader on Thursday, October 7, 2010 at 11:00am.

    Mission Statement:

I AM A PART of the Fellowship of the Unashamed.

The die has been cast. The decision has been made. I have stepped over the line. I won't look

back, let up, slow down, back away or be still.

My past is redeemed, my present makes sense, and my future is in God.s hands.

I am finished and done with low living, sight walking, small planning, the bare minimum, smooth

knees, colorless dreams, tamed visions, mundane talking, frivolous living, selfish giving, and

    dwarfed goals.

I no longer need preeminence, prosperity, position, promotions, applause, or popularity.

I don't have to be right, first, the best, recognized, praised, regarded, or rewarded.

I now live by faith. I lean on Christ.s presence. I love with patience, live by prayer, and labor with the

    power of God.s grace.

My face is set. My gait is fast, my goal is heaven. My road is narrow, my way is rough, my

companions are few, my Guide is reliable, and my mission is clear.

I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, deluded, or delayed.

I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of adversity, negotiate at the

table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity, or meander in the maze of mediocrity.

I won’t give up, shut up, let up or slow up until I have stayed up, stored up, prayed up, paid

up, and spoken up for the cause of Christ.

I am a disciple of Jesus. I am a Catholic.

I must go till He comes, give until I drop, speak out until all know,

and work until He stops me.

And when He returns for His own, He will have no difficulty recognizing me.

My banner is clear: I am a part of the Fellowship of the Unashamed.

Our Lady on the Rosary as Family Prayer
and as a Spiritual Weapon Against Evil of Every Kind
Making the rosary a family prayer is very pleasing to me. I ask that all families strive to do so. But be careful to say it with great devotion, meditating on each mystery and striving to imitate in your daily lives the virtues depicted therein. Live the mysteries of the rosary as I lived them, and it will become a chain binding you to me forever. They who are found in the circle of my rosary will never be lost. I myself will lead them at death to the throne of my Son, to be eternally united to Him.
If possible, the family rosary should be prayed every day with as many members of the family who may be present.

  7. If possible, the family rosary should be prayed every day with as
many members of the family who may be present. (Diary, Pg. 39.)
The word “rosary” means “rose garden,” “garland,” “bouquet of roses.”
Pagans, whose ritual of devotion to their gods included crowning their idols with roses,
turned their hatred for the true God to persecution of Christians. To repudiate their
practice, many Christian virgins went to their martyrdom dressed in their finest and
wearing a crown of roses which the brethren later gathered and used in their prayer. An
old legend tells of a youth praying the Rosary; as each Hail Mary left his lips and Our
Lady gathered them, they became rose buds which she then wove into a crown for her
own head. How many times have we followed this practice with our May crowning,
weaving roses or other flowers to crown the head of Mary’s image?
The 150 Psalms of David, called the Psalter, formed the Liturgy of God’s people
for centuries before Christ. Christ prayed these Psalms; so did the apostles. They are
the chief form of Christian prayer. The Psalms were put into 7 groups of 3 hours each
and would be chanted in the local churches by monks or cantors. The people were
expected to attend, at least for Prime and Compline, morning and evening prayer.
Since ordinary, uneducated people were often unable to attend or could not read to
chant, Pater Nosters were eventually substituted for the Psalms. A method was needed
to keep track of the number of times the prayer was said. Records indicate the origin of
“beads” began with the desert Fathers who used pebbles to count their prayers, or put
pegs in boards. Others claim the Muslims and Buddhists of the East were first to use
“rosaries” or strings of beads for counting their prayers of praise to God, and that this
