Forget fashion, It’s all about style

I love clothes. What worries me however, is how often the clothes available leave me adjusting necklines and pulling down hems to feel comfortable. So in an effort both to fuel my affection and give me ideas, I have recently taken to scrawling through many a style blog.

True, perhaps too many hours have been wasted in this fashion (pardon the pun), but I have been privy to some new and rather exciting concepts. Although bits and pieces of current styles are evident, for the most part people are photographed for their unique personal look; something that looks great on them because they’ve worn it their way and “own it”. Their confidence in wearing what suits them is what conveys a sense of style to those around them.

My favourite blog that encompasses this is The Sartorialist. Scott Schuman is the photographer behind this blog - he shoots everyday people, in whatever city he happens to be in,whose style choices he admires. I love how different most of the pictures are – filled with either classic or quirky looks by both men and women. Karla’s Closet is another example, in which Karla photographs her own wardrobe choices. With many a vintage piece, her style is distinctive but it suits her well. Or even Tiger Print's own Katie, who runs a personal style blog ModlyChic.

Where the desire to be trendy has overwhelmed me I have often succumbed to things too short, too tight, and altogether mostly unflattering to my body shape. What is readily available these days is styled for the stick-thin and exceptionally tall, which happily disregards about 99 percent of the population including myself! But with this concept of lasting style – wearing what suits my colouring, shape and personal taste as opposed to sticking only to what mass production has to offer – the world of style has finally opened its doors to me. I can pull off the classy look I want as long as I feel comfortable and confident.
